The small Scottish village of Bickhill Side is in Roxburghshire and once held its own races on Wednesday 17th November 1847. The meeting consisted of a Match between The Doctor, nicknamed Bob, who was ridden by Mr Laing, and Peruvian ridden by Frank Brodie. Mr Thomas Tod acted as judge for the Match which was staged over fair hunting ground on the outskirts of the village. At the first fence, which was described as a yawner, Peruvian baulked and lost ground, but gradually made it up and raced neck and neck until the final fence. On the run-in The Doctor showed the better turn of foot and went on to win by a comfortable 6 lengths. There is no further evidence of a meeting taking place in the vicinity of the village. |
